About

Katz’s Deli is a discussion-based residency and exhibition program led by artist Amanda Martin Katz. Residents develop projects with Katz through writing contracts that delineate their anticipated production needs and material formats. Additionally, the contract provides a site to negotiate the total labor required to independently produce both the conditions for their creative risk-taking and raise support for its public presentation. The attempt to document and understand the series of exchanges that makes this possible comprises Katz’s overarching proposition: to explore the limits of collaborative practice. Residencies culminate in roundtable discussions over brunch, during which Katz, the residents, and attendees collectively review the contractual document in light of the social relating and aesthetic production that actually occurred.

Transactional pedagogy constitutes the brunch economy; attendees are required to bring a text for exchange with one another and inclusion in the Katz’s Deli Archive.

The particularities of the program’s structure are constantly shifting in order to question means of “residence” through contemporary notions of site, hospitality, and exchange in artistic practice. Programming is focused on installation, performance, and participatory works.
